Literacy
Building a Love of Reading & Writing
Rangeview’s Early Years program uses systematic phonics and decodable readers effectively.
Literacy
Whole School Approach
Our aim is to develop confident students who are lifelong readers and writers and competent communicators.
Rangeview Primary School implements an evidence-based and strategic approach to the teaching of Literacy that is underpinned by the Victorian Curriculum. Explicit and consistent instruction is evident across all year levels.
Strategies and skills are taught through a workshop approach where students engage in explicit mini-lessons, practise skills and strategies, work in small groups, have agency and conference with their teacher to reflect on and extend their learning. Regular assessment takes place to inform next steps in instruction.
Reading and Viewing
We aim for students to develop a love of reading, find it useful, think deeply and be proficient readers.
We read for entertainment and information. Students read and view a variety of texts in planned instruction.
At Rangeview students are taught the essential elements of the reading process.
It is important for students to …
- accurately read the words (decoding)
- understand what they read (comprehension)
- develop fluency and phrasing
- build vocabulary knowledge
Classrooms have their own rich libraries and our school has a beautiful library to support our readers.
Early Reading -Systematic Structured Literacy
Our Early Years curriculum delivers rigorous systematic phonics instruction and decodable readers are implemented to teach essential early reading and spelling skills. Rangeview incorporates the Little Learners Love Literacy program and subscribes to Decodable Readers Australia. Our early years team are trained in this approach. This gives our Foundation students the best start to reading and writing.
Writing
At Rangeview we encourage students to view themselves as authors. Everybody has a story to tell! We write to inform, entertain and persuade.
Students learn about the process of writing -planning, drafting, revising and editing. They learn to craft text using the important traits of writing and the Seven Steps To Writing Success. Students have opportunities to write their own texts and practise writing directed texts. Like real authors, students have Writer’s Notebooks to explore writing ideas. Students participate in explicit and regular spelling sessions. Spelling sessions are referred to as Word Work. This sets the tone for working with words, manipulating words and investigating words. The term encompasses phonemic awareness, phonology, spelling conventions, grammar, morphology and etymology.
Speaking and Listening
Speaking and listening refers to the various formal and informal ways oral language is used to communicate and receive meaning. It is the umbrella of all learning. Students practise appropriate oral language for audiences and occasions, including body language and voice. They also learn about active-listening strategies and an understanding of the conventions of different spoken texts. In Speaking and Listening we offer a variety of opportunities for students to develop their skills and to speak in front of each other, their class, small groups, and at school assemblies. At Rangeview it is common to see students greeting each before the day begins and presenting at formal events.

It’s not the curriculum that we offer that sets us apart...
....it’s the manner in which it’s delivered. Our teachers actively and passionately explore the possibilities of making their teaching practice more innovative, engaging and fun at every turn. This is the single ingredient that drives the most growth in our students.
Curriculum that Inspires
