Solving Real World Problems

Rangeview Primary School believes that Mathematics encourages children to develop critical thinking skills and solve problems in the real world.

Numeracy

At Rangeview, we believe in providing a robust and engaging Mathematics education that equips our students with essential skills for their future. We aspire to challenge every student in order to develop and extend their mathematical proficiency and literacy. The four Proficiencies of Mathematics (Understanding, Fluency, Problem-Solving and Reasoning) underpin our planning.

Understanding: We focus on building a strong conceptual foundation to ensure our students gain a deep understanding of how to represent Mathematical concepts in different ways. This supports students to make connections and fosters a deeper comprehension that supports long-term retention.

Fluency: We support our students to recall facts and concepts easily and to calculate answers efficiently. This ensures students can apply their skills in various contexts.
Problem-solving: Students learn to approach complex problems with confidence, using a variety of strategies to find solutions. We encourage them to think critically and creatively and support them to develop a growth mindset.
Reasoning: Logical thinking and reasoning are at the heart of Mathematics. We teach students to make and test conjectures, justify their answers, and communicate their reasoning clearly.

INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL

A consistent Mathematics instructional model allows for differentiation and student engagement in rich, authentic learning tasks whilst making connections to ‘real world’ problems. In meeting the demands of a changing world our aim is to prepare students to problem-solve, think critically and creatively, communicate, collaborate and explore. Our approach is grounded in research-based practices ensuring that every lesson is both effective and enjoyable for our students. Our teaching practices are based on the Launch-Explore-Summarise student-centred instructional model (Sullivan et al., 2021).

Launch: Each lesson begins with a clear introduction to the concept, designed to spark curiosity and set the stage for learning. We present problems and scenarios that are relatable to our students' everyday experiences. Engaging Maths Talks are a key feature of the Launch, providing a safe space for our students to justify their thinking.

Explore: During this phase, students engage hands-on with the mathematical concepts. They work individually or in groups to solve real world applications of Mathematics at level that is right for them. In this stage of ‘work time’ our students are engaged and challenged appropriately.

Summarise: To conclude, we bring students together to discuss findings, clarify misunderstandings, and reinforce key ideas. This reflection time helps consolidate learning and encourages students to articulate their thinking.
Explicit teaching of Mathematical concepts occurs authentically during each stage of our Mathematics lessons.

GROWTH MINDSET
Developing a growth mindset in mathematical thinking and engaging students in Mathematics, is a key priority at Rangeview. With this in mind we offer a Maths Specialist subject that all Foundation-Level 6 students attend weekly, in addition to Maths lessons undertaken by their classroom teacher.

At Rangeview our goal is to create confident, capable, and enthusiastic Mathematicians who are prepared for the challenges of the future. Through our structured yet flexible approach, we strive to make Mathematics a subject that every student can enjoy and excel in.

It’s not the curriculum that we offer that sets us apart...

....it’s the manner in which it’s delivered. Our teachers actively and passionately explore the possibilities of making their teaching practice more innovative, engaging and fun at every turn. This is the single ingredient that drives the most growth in our students.
